Walking in Tuscany - Itinerary 2007

From the soaring peaks of the Alpi Apuane to the alpine meadows of the Orecchiella and the hilltop villages of the Garfagnana, Tuscany Walking have some stunning new walks for the 2007 season that will let you experience the full variety of scenery that this region of Northern Tuscany has to offer.

Monte Croce - Palagnana

A relatively easy walk in the shadow of the Panie Massif.

This walk gives us spectacular views of the limestone scenery that is so typical of the Apuan Alps and the hidden villages that lie between the Garfagnana and the Tyrrhenean coast.

Pania Croce

A "must do" ascent of the mountain that dominates the Mediavalle area of the Garfagnana.

At times this is a demanding walk but the sense of achievement on reaching the summit is well worth any effort.

Monte Giovo - Lago Santo - Renaio/Vetricia

A walk that explores the beech woods that cloak the foothills of the Toscana-Emiliano ridge before ascending to the ridge and then southwards to the solitary beauty of Lago Santo.

Cima dell'Omo - Monte Giovo - Renaio/Vetricia

Another section of the Toscana-Emiliano ridge that takes in two of the highest peaks in Tuscany.

From the summit of either we can see as far south as Livorno and onwards to the Mediterranean and the islands of Elba, Capraia, and even Corsica.

Monte Prado - Cassone del'Profecchia

At 2054 metres Monte Prado is the highest peak in Tuscany.

This one of the easier walks and also one of the longest in our portfolio. Affording views that stretch north and east into Emilia Romagna, and then south and west to encompass the entire Garfagnana and Orecchiella national parks, this is a walk that demands to be done.

Orridi di Botri

A walk that can either explore that higher slopes of the gorge and the almost nature-defying peaks and precipices, or can experience the guide-led river walk that opens up the darker regions of the gorge bottom.

Monte Forato

A circular route that starts from near the Groto del Vento cave complex and that climbs steadily to the spectacular natural arch of Monte Forato that forms the mouth of the "l'Uomo Morte" of the Garfagnana.

This walk is demanding but rewarding.

Monte Sumbra

A walk further north in the Garfagnana above Laga di Vagli and the two villages of Vagli Sotto and Vagli Sopra.

We walk through the beech, chestnut and Conifer woods that give an all year round interest but which comes into its own in September and October when the hillsides are a leafy tapestry of gold, bronze, scarlet, vermilion, green and brown.

A walk definitely not for beginners but as good as it gets when crossing the high meadows towards the Monte Sumbra summit cross.

Arnetola - Monte Sella

A walk to the north of Lago di Vagli which offers us a glimpse of the quarrying that has gone on for centuries.

The walk offers glimpses of the high Apuan peaks as well as chance to cross the Sella ridge. A walk best done in late summer when the surrounding peaks often appear as islands in a milk-white sea of cloud.

Vetricia - Cima dell'Omo - Rommecchio

A further exploration of the ridge that divides Tuscany from Emilia-Romagna.

Setting off from either the hillside hamlet of Renaio or the woodland rifugio of Vetricia we climb up through the beech and chestnut trees the cloak the lower slopes until reaching the 6000+ peak of Cima Dell'Omo.
