Walking in Italy, Castelnuovo

Castelnuovo di Garfagnana

Castelnuovo di Garfagnana is the regional and administrative capital. It is situated at the confluence of the Serchio river and the Turrite Secca river.

The local economy is mainly based on the production of cereals and various textile industries.

The name "Castelnuovo" (or New-castle), refers to a castle being built on a site after a previous one.

The town has a weekly market on Thursdays which can be dated back to the thirteenth century and evolved due to the town's proximity to the rivers.

Things to see in Castelnuovo di Garfagnana include the Duomo, the Convento dei Cappuccini, the Rocca Estense and the Castello di San Nicolao.
